July 30: Derek Trucks Band to play Syracuse Nov. 1
The Derek Trucks Band will perform at the Crouse-Hinds Concert Theater November 1. Tickets are $49.50, $39.50 and $29.50 and go on sale at 10 a.m. Friday (July 31) at the Oncenter box office, www.ticketmaster.com, and at 800-345-3000.
July 28: Fritz’s Polka Band returns to Boonville’s Swiss Picnic
Verona, N.Y.: On Sunday, August 2nd, Jagermeister-sponsored, Fritz’s Polka Band (FPB) from Verona, NY, will perform again at the Swiss Picnic, held at Stysh’s Brown Barn Campground (Moose River Road) in Boonville, NY. FPB will perform from 1 to 5 p.m.
“We’re looking forward to performing again for the Swiss Picnic,” said Fritz Scherz, band leader of Fritz’s Polka Band. “FPB Fan Club Member, Marian Carpenter and her family have been hosting this event for over 20 years, and it’s always a great event for all ages. Marian was even recognized a few years ago by New York State Senator, Joe Griffo, as he credited her with keeping this great community tradition going strong. The guys in FPB encourage people of all ages to attend.”
July 24: Little Feat and Foghat coming to Inner Harbor
Two more shows have been added to the Hump Day Concert Series lineup. Foghat will perform August 19 and Little Feat will be in town August 26. The free concert takes place every Wednesday at Syracuse’s Inner Harbor. Music starts at 4:30 p.m.
The series also includes performances by The Outlaws (July 29), Skid Row and the Rods (August 5), and the Marshall Tucker Band (August 12).
July 22: Tragically Hip to play Landmark November 7
The Tragically Hip will be at the Landmark Theatre in Syracuse on November 7.
Tickets are $37.50 will go on sale at noon Saturday, July 25, at the Landmark box office. They will also be available on livenation.com and ticketmaster.com.
July 19: Star Search for a Cause fundraiser set for July 31
The Hope for Heather Foundation presents a special fundraiser Friday, July 31 at Meghan MacMurphy’s (7990 Oswego Rd., Liverpool). Star Search for a Cause offers local amateur singers the chance to compete in an Idol-style sing-off for bragging rights and a $100 prize. A panel of judges will review each performance. There will also be a 50/50 drawing and raffles.
The event starts at 7 p.m. and admission is $10. Singers should arrive early to sign up.
The Hope for Heather Foundation was founded in memory of Heather Weeks, who succumbed to ovarian cancer at age 24. She was an advocate for women’s cancer and committed to raising funds to find a cure. The foundation’s goal is to work towards finding a cure for this disease.
July 13: Common Council approves move for Party in the Plaza
The Syracuse Common Council has approved the Updowntowners plan to move the former Party in the Plaza to the roof of a city-owned parking garage at West Washington and West Streets. The vote on the motion was 9-0.
The party, which moves from its traditional Wednesday night to Thursday, will kick off July 16 pending approval by the New York State Liquor Authority.
The event has been renamed Obcityan and will run through September 24.
June 25: Fritz’s Polka Band nominated for JPFMO awards
Jagermeister-sponsored, Fritz’s Polka Band has been nominated for the 2009 Just Plain Folks Music Awards by the Just Plain Folks Music Organization (JPFMO). Two of the band’s songs, “Grandparents Polka” and “It Doesn’t Matter” were nominated in the Best Polka Song category and their album Live at the New York State Fair was nominated in the Best Polka Album category.
“The guys in FPB are excited by these nominations,” Fritz Scherz said in a press release. “It’s a complete surprise, especially given the level of competition and the sheer number of entries that were submitted. We had hoped we might get one nomination, but to get three is great! We owe a huge thanks to the legion of fans we’ve made over the years, all the people in the FPB Fan Club, as well as our great sponsor, Jagermeister. Plus, a special thanks to all of the media and music critics that have been so great to us!”
The awards will be given out on August 29 in Nashville.
