Monday, Nov. 30: SSO at Auburn High School

It’s the last day of November and the holidays are right around the corner. After the big medium_ron-spigelman-casual.JPGThanksgiving weekend, you might want to relax with some live music tonight.

Here’s what’s going on:

  • The Syracuse Symphony presents a Holiday Pops concert at the Auburn High School Auditorium (250 Lake Ave, Auburn). Ron Spigelman conducts. The concert starts at 8 p.m. and tickets are $30.
  • Charley Orlando and Colin Aberdeen are at the Dinosaur Bar-B-Que (246 W. Water St.).
  • Ryan Burdick performs at the Copper Top Tavern (905 N. Main St., North Syracuse) starting at 6 p.m.
  • DJ Smegie hosts karaoke at Singer’s Karaoke Club (1345 Milton Ave. ) at 9 p.m.
  • The weekly country music showcase starts at 6 p.m. at the Phoenix American Legion Country Music Showcase (Route 57, Phoenix)

Sunday, Nov. 29: VanNorstrand Band at the Westcott

The weekend is winding down, but there’s no shortage of entertainment in and aroundvannordstum.jpg the ‘Cuse. Here’s what’s going on:

VanNorstrands at the Westcott

The Andrew and Noah VanNorstrand Band performs at the Westcott Theater (524 Westcott St.). The show starts at 7:30 p.m. and tickets are $10.

Benefit for Fred Crittela

Area musicians will gather today at the Palace Theatre (2384 James St.) for a benefit for restaurant owner Fred Crittela who is suffering from heart disease.  The event starts at 2 p.m. and includes performances by the Lenny’s Room house band with Tommy Rozzano, Jerry More, Rick Balestra, Jack Holton and Jimmy Cox (2:15 p.m.), Jodi Bilotti with Jimmy Cox (3 p.m.), Todd Hobin (3:20 p.m.), Maria DeSantis with Jimmy Cox (3:40 p.m.), and Joe Whiting with Terry Quill (4 p.m.).

Area chefs will provide food. Admission is $25.

Also today

  • The McCarthy-Paisley Band celebrates the release of their CD, Hand-Picked, at the American Legion (Main St., Marcellus). The event starts at 2 p.m. and admission is free.
  • The SU Brass Ensemble performs at Saints Peter and John Episcopal Church (169 Genesee St., Auburn). The holiday-themed concert starts at 7 p.m. and admission is free.

Saturday, Nov. 28: Back to the 80s at the Oncenter

The Thanksgiving weekend continues with more great live music in and around the ‘Cuse. Here’s what’s going on:

The Romantics and Square Pegs headline tonight’s Back to the 80s extravaganza at romantic.jpgthe Oncenter (800 S. State St.). The event will also feature a Michael Jackson tribute. Get out you big hair and shoulder pads and head on out for a great time. Prizes will be given to the best 80’s outfits.

Tickets are $10 and are available at the Oncenter box office.

Also tonight

  • Paul Fye and Friends perform at 7:30 p.m. at  Steeple Coffeehouse (310 E. Genesee St., Fayetteville). Admission is $7 and includes entertainment, dessert and beverage.
  • Ten Man Push is at the Center for the Arts (72 S. Main St., Homer) for an 8 p.m. show. General admission is $15. Students pay $8 and children under 12 are admitted free.
  • Spitfire Rhymer hosts a hip-hop show atClub 410 (410 Pearl St.) starting at 10 p.m. Featured performers include MCs Prospect Penz, 3D, and Whitney Peyton. Admission is $20 and VIP passes are available for $50.

In This Moment with In Fear and Faith, Agraceful, and Motionless in White are at the Lost Horizon (5863 Thompson Rd.) for an 8 p.m. show. Tickets are $15 at the door.

  • Merry Mischief performs at 6 p.m. at the Erie Canal Museum’s Gingerbread Gallery in downtown Syracuse as part of the annual tree-lighting ceremony that takes place in Clinton Square.
  • Neil Young tribute band, I Love New York, is at the Westcott Theater (524 Westcott St.). The show starts at 8 p.m. and tickets are $10.
  • The Commander Cody Band performs upstairs at the Dinosaur Bar-B-Que (246 W. Willow St.). The show starts at 10 p.m. and tickets are $15 at the door.
  • Annie and the Hedonists are at the Kirkland Art Center (9 1/2 East Park Row, Clinton) starting at 8 p.m. Tickets are $15 at the door.

Wednesday, Nov. 25: Area clubs hoppin’ on Thanksgiving Eve

The biggest shopping day of the season comes the day after Thanksgiving, but before 080430_sacco.jpgthe holiday comes the annual Thanksgiving Eve night out!  In what’s become an annual tradition, folks returning home for the holiday join forces with old friends and hit area clubs with a vengeance.

Live music will abound and it should be a great night to get out and about in and around the ‘Cuse! It’s not your typical Wednesday night, that’s for sure!

Tuesday, Nov. 24: Dark Star Orchestra at the Westcott

Jam rock band Dark Star Orchestra performs tonight at the Westcott Theater (524 Westcott St.). The concert starts at 9 p.m. and tickets are $30.

Dark Star Orchestra was formed in 1997 as a tribute to the legendary Grateful Dead. Rather than simply cover the Dead’s songs, however, DSO performs original set lists from Dead concerts, recreating the entire show, giving Dead fans an opportunity to relive these shows and introducing the band to the younger generation.

The current lineup includes John Kadlecik (lead guitar, vocals), Rob Eaton (rhythm guitar, vocals), Kevin Rosen (bass, vocals), Lisa Mackey (vocals), Rob Koritz (drums, percussion), Dino English (drums, percussion), and Rob Barraco (keyboards, vocals).

Also tonight

Token Tom hosts a Karaoke and Acoustic Open Mike at ShamROCKS! Rock and Roll Irish Pub. Music starts at 8 p.m.

DJ Streets is featured at Singer’s Karaoke Club (1345 Milton Ave.) at 9 p.m.

Joe Henson hosts the weekly open mike at the Village Tavern (6 E. Main St., Marcellus) starting at 7:30 p.m.

There’s also an open mike at Lock 24 featuring Sweetlou. Music starts at 8:30 p.m.

CNY music news roundup

It’s Monday and time to look at this week’s CNY music news highlights.  Here’s the latest:

Lori Wilber wins Lost Horizon’s Ultimate Idol

The first ‘Ultimate Idol’ competition at Syracuse’s Lost Horizon iloriann.jpgs over and Nightshift’s Lori Ann Wilber has been declared the winner.  Lori won the $500 prize and bragging rights in this ‘American Idol-esque’ competition.

The rest of the top ten included  Lauren Angelone, Heidi Donahue, Jenna Foubister, Sonia Hudgins, Jackie Rivera, Gina Rowell, Roze Valentino, Jade Widger, and Carla Zamudio.

Angel Cline, the contest organize, reports the second edition of the contest will kick off in January.

Local bands bumped from CMT’s ‘Music City Madness’

CMT’s online video singing competition, Music City Madness, and two local talents - Cassidy Lynn and Chris Taylor and the Custom Taylor Band - made it to the top 32. Unfortunately, both have been eliminated from the contest.

Cassidy Lynn made it through two rounds, while Chris Taylor survived one round.

Joe Whiting to tour with Savoy Brown

CNY’s own Joe Whiting will be joining blues-rock band Savoy Brown for a short leg of their tour. Whiting will perform with the band in Shirley, Mass December 11,  Bay Shore, Long Island December 12,  and Sellersville, Pa. December 13.

Whiting has been approached by the band’s leader, Kim Simmonds, to work on their next studio album.

Brand New Sin releases new album

Brand New Sin has announced the release of their fourth studio album, Distilled. The first single, “Summertime,” was recorded at Subcat Music Studios in Skaneateles.

Sunday, November 22: Phish at the War Memorial and more

It’s the night Phish fans have been long-anticipating! The rock jam band performs tonight at the Onondaga County War Memorial. The show starts at 7:30. The concert is sold out.

There will be a free party for Phish fans at the Nicholas J. Pirro Convention Center, next door to the War Memorial. The party starts at 9 a.m. Music starts at 11 a.m. and  features performances by local bands, including Dark Hollow, vendors, and contests. A pair of tickets to the show will be one of the prizes!

Bring lawn chairs and blankets!

Phish after-parties

Several area clubs are planning after-parties to extend the Phish madness. Funk ‘N Waffles (727 S. Crouse Ave.) will feature music by the Giant Panda Guerrilla Dub Squad starting at 11:30 p.m. Admission is $10.

Pretty Lights , a two-man band from Colorado, will be at the Westcott Theater (524 Westcott St.) for a party that also starts at 11:30 p.m. Admission is $20.

  • Solo guitarists will perform at the Solvay Public Library (615 Woods Road, Solvay) starting at 2 p.m. Admission is free.
  • Lynyrd Skynyrd rocks the Event Center at Turning Stone Resort and Casino. The show starts at 8 p.m. and tickets are $65, $85, and $100.
  • Frank Sinatra Jr. is at the Showroom at Turning Stone Resort and Casino for an 8 p.m. show. Tickets are $40, $45, and $55.
