Saturday, October 3: Pumpkin Festival kicks off in Oswego

Oswego celebrates the great pumpkin this weekend with the annual CNY Great 091003_pumpkins.jpgPumpkin Festival. The event, which takes place in Washington Square Park (Route 104 East, Oswego), runs from 11 a.m. to 6 p.m. today, and from 11 a.m. to 5 p.m. Sunday.

Musical guests include The Jam Bones, The Barlow-Domicolo Band, and Patti and The Cruzers.

In addition to music, the event features arts and crafts, pumpkin carving contests and lessons, ghost stories told by City Historian Rosemary Nesbitt, and lots of great food. There will also be a competition for the biggest pumpkin!

Admission is free.

In addition to the event in Oswego, the Great Cortland Pumpkin Fest takes place Saturday and Sunday, and the Pompey Pumpkin Fest is on Sunday.

Also today

  • Alecstar and the New York Flyers perform at Turning Stone Resort and Casino in Verona. The show starts at 8 p.m. and tickets are $15 and $25.
  • Fritz’s Polka Band headlines Oktoberfest at Vernon Downs. The event runs from 2 to 10 p.m. and features a German and Polish foods, a variety of great domestic and imported beers, and crafts. FPB performs at noon. The Neverly Brothers are also performing at the event and take the stage at 9 p.m.
  • Syracuse Friends of Chamber Music present the Emerson String Quartet at Lincoln Middle School (1613 James St.). The program includes Mendelssohn’s “String Quartet in E Flat Major, Op. 12,” Beethoven’s “String Quartet in Eb, Op.74,” and Shostakovich’s “Quarter No. 9 in E-flat Major, op. 117. The concert starts at 8 p.m. and admission is free.
  • Children’s performer Justin Roberts is at the State Theatre (107 West State Street, Ithaca) with special guest Family Reading Partnership Read-Along Songs starring John Simon and Cal Walker. The show starts at 3 p.m. and tickets are $15 for adults and $12 for children.
  • Phil Markert, the former Syracuse radio personality, presents “A Senior Moment or Two … or Three … or Four” at the Palace Theatre (2384 James St.). The show starts at 7:30 p.m. Tickets are $15 at the door.
