Friday, July 31: Star Search for a Cause and more

The Hope for Heather Foundation presents a special fundraiser tonight at Meghan mike.jpgMacMurphy’s (7990 Oswego Rd., Liverpool). Star Search for a Cause offers local amateur singers the chance to compete in an Idol-style sing-off for bragging rights and a $100 prize. A panel of judges will review each performance. There will also be a 50/50 drawing and raffles.

The event starts at 7 p.m. and admission is $10. Singers should arrive early to sign up. The Hope for Heather Foundation was founded in memory of Heather Weeks, who succumbed to ovarian cancer at age 24. She was an advocate for women’s cancer and committed to raising funds to find a cure. The foundation’s goal is to work towards finding a cure for this disease.

Giant Panda Guerilla Dub Squad headlines tonight’s show in the Main Street Music concert series taking place in the parking lot of the Market Place Mall (64 Main St., Cortland). The concert starts at 6 p.m. and admission is free.

Thursday, July 30: 3 Inch Fury at Market Block Party and more

The weekend starts on Thursday in the ‘Cuse with the weekly Market Block Party at080701_3inchfury.jpg the Central New York Regional Market (Park St.).  Tonight’s show features 3 Inch Fury, Kane, and Johnny Bender.

Music starts at 6 p.m. and admission is free. Get on down and mix and mingle, enjoy some great music, food, and your favorite beverage.

The Updowntowners’ Obcityan continues tonight on the roof the parking garage at the corner of West Washington and West Streets. Admission is $5, which covers one drink - either a glass of wine or beer. The event runs from 5 to 9 p.m.

TJ Sacco and the Electric Rodeo perform at tonight’s Bike Night at Performance Harley Davidson (807 N. Geddes St.). The party starts at 6 p.m. and runs until 10 p.m. Catering is provided by the Limp Lizard, and along with music and food, there will be prizes, a burnout contest, and more. Admission is free.

The 2009 Jazz in the City concert series kicks off tonight with saxophonist Teodross AveryThe Blacklites open for Avery.  The concert starts at 7 p.m. in the field behind Dunk and Bright (2648 S Salina St.).

J.D. and Rollin South to compete at NYS Fair

J.D. and Rollin South have been selected to perform at the Colgate Country Showdown, a talent contest featuring country musicians that will take place at this year’s New York State Fair. The event, which was recently added to the fair’s schedule, will be held at the Mohegan Sun Grandstand on September 1 and starts at 7:30 p.m. 

J.D. and the band are scheduled to open the show, which is free with paid admission to the fair.

The State Fair winner wins $1,000 and a chance to advance to the national competition.

Update: Tonight’s party at the Inner Harbor featuring Thoutlaws.jpge Outlaws with Sons of the Empire has been postponed due to rain. We’ll let you know when the gig is rescheduled.

Emilee Smith to open for Blue Oyster Cult

Emilee Smith , an up-and-coming 15-year-old singer songerwriter from Smyrna, N.Y.emilee-promo-2-email-1.jpg will be one of the performers to open for legendary rock band Blue Oyster Cult at 96.9 WOUR’s Fireworks over Utica on August 22. Emilee is set to perform at 4:30 p.m. at Hanna Park in Utica.

Emilee recently released her first CD, Hall of Mirrors.  Her voice has a maturity about it that belies her age and her original compositions have impressive depth. Emilee will also be performing at the Utica Music and Arts Festival (September 10-12).

Tickets for the event are $10.  Children under five will be admitted free.

The Sunset Safari Music Series continues at Syracuse’s Rosamondsunset-safari.jpg Gifford Zoo (1 Conservatory Place). The event, which starts at 5:30 p.m., includes live music, a cash bar, a gourmet picnic, dinner, and a chance to watch the sunset at the zoo.

Monday, July 27: Soul Mine in Liverpool and more

The week kicks off with the Liverpool is the Place concert at Johnson Park (Route 080704_orchestra.jpg57 and Vine St.) in the village. The concert series is produced by the Liverpool is the Place committee and sponsored by various Liverpool-area businesses.

Tonight’s show features Soul Mine and starts at 7 p.m. Admission is free. Bring a chair and enjoy!

The Northeast Jazz & Wine Festival gears up tonight in Syracuse’s Clinton Square with performances by the John Stetch Trio (6:30 p.m.), the CNY Jazz Orchestra (8:15 p.m.), and Marion Meadows (10 p.m.) .  Admission to the event is free.

Harborfest
