Blacklites the perfect ending to a successful Juneteenth

Saturday’s  annual Juneteenth Festival in Syracuse kicked off with a parade featuring New York’s First Lady, Michelle Paterson and ended with an outrag090614_bl.jpgeous performance by local R&B band The Blacklites. In between, there was great food, informational booths, entertainment, voter registration, and even a health pavilion sponsored by SUNY Upstate Medical University.

The festival, which commemorates June 19, 1865, the day the last American slaves heard the news of their freedom, got a bad rap when violence erupted two years ago. Despite losing corporate sponsorships, churches, local businesses and individuals joined forces to raise enough money to save the event.

Saturday night’s crowd was older, but that didn’t mean they didn’t get in the groove as the Blacklites ripped out a set that included a tribute to James Brown and their new single, “Lookin’ for Love.”  The Blacklites will be performing on July 11 at the Fashion Extravaganza Cancer Fundraiser at the Palace Theater (2384 James St.).
