Tuesday, April 7: Trombonist Fred Wesley at the Westcott

Fred Wesley and the New JBs are at the Westcott Theater (524 Westcott St.) at 8 p.m. Wesley is a trombonist, composer, arranger, and band090401_wesley.jpgleader who played with James Brown’s band in the 1960s and 1970s.

Wesley played on some of Brown’s greatest hits, including “Say it Loud - I’m Black and I’m Proud,” and is credited as a co-writer on many of Brown’s hits, including “Hot Pants.”

After leaving Brown’s band in 1975, Wesley played with George Clinton’s Parliaments and Funkadelics. He also joined the Count Basie Orchestra, and released several jazz albums, including To Someone (1988), New Friends (1990), Comme Ci, Comme Ca (1991), along with several live albums.

In recent years, Wesley was an adjunct professor in Jazz Studies at the University of North Carolina’s School of Music.
