Canadian rockers, The Tragically Hip perform tonight at the Landmark Theatre (362 S Salina St.). The show starts at 8 p.m. and tickets are $37.50.

Friday, Nov. 6: Big Break finale at the Westcott Theater

bigbreak.jpgThe Westcott Theater’s Big Break moves into the final round tonight with the winner of the summer-long competition to be determined.

Finalists will perform in the following order: Phantom Chemistry (7 p.m.), Juice Break (8 p.m.), Augustine (9 p.m.), Gracious Sakes Alive (10 p.m.), and Sophistafunk (11 p.m.). The winner will be announced at 12:30 a.m.

Come out and support your favorite band and hear some of CNY’s best live music. Bands are judged not only on their performances, but also on fan support.

Doors open at 6 p.m. and the show starts at 7 p.m.  Admission is $10.

  • Folk singer John Gorka is at May Memorial United Unitarian Universalist Society (3800 E. Genesee St.) at 8 p.m. Tickets are $12.

Thursday, Nov. 5: Steve Kimock at the Westcott

Steve Kimock’s Crazy Engine is hitting the road this fall and stops tonight at the Westcottkimock.jpg Theater (524 Westcott St.). The show, which features legendary Hammond B3 player Melvin Seals who played with the Jerry Garcia Band for 20 years, starts at 9 p.m.

Kimock has performed with such legends as Peter Frampton, Little Feat, Jerry Garcia and all members of the Grateful Dead, Bruce Hornsby, Bonnie Raitt, The Allman Brothers, Buddy Miles, Buddy Cage, Trey Anastasio and all members of Phish, Jorma Kaukonen, Vassar Clements, Screamin’ Jay Hawkins, Joe Satriani, Baaba Maal, Angelique Kidjo, Elvin Bishop, Steve Winwood, Derek Trucks, George Porter Jr., Ivan Neville, Grace Slick, Papa John Creach, and many more.

Sunday, November 1: Derek Trucks in the ‘Cuse

Trucks began playing guitar at nine and by the time he was 12, he had already played with such legends as Buddy Guy. He was also sitting in with the Allman Brothers Band. In 1999, he became an official member of the band and continues to tour with them.

Trucks is a master slide guitarist, whose blues and rock roots go deep. He has recorded with the Allman Brothers, his own band, and has also collaborated with Gregg Allman, Widespread Panic, Bela Fleck and the Flecktones, Gov’t Mule, Elvin Bishop, and many others.

His most recent album, Already Free (January 2009), debuted at No. 19 on the Billboard Top 200 Chart, and #1 on the Internet chart, No. 4 on the Rock chart and No. 1 on the Blues chart, marking the band’s highest debut on the Billboard Top 200 chart to date.

Saturday, October 31: Halloween Havoc at the fairgrounds

It’s Halloween, and that means celebrating at KRock’s Halloween Havoc at the Horticulture building on the grounds of the New York State Fair. It’s spooky and it’s kooky, and will include performances by Trapt, Papercut Massacre, Cry for the Blind, and After Midnight Project.

The event also features a “fully, terrifying, no joke, borderline psychotic haunted house” and a costume contest with over $2,000 in prizes!

Tickets are $21 at the door.

Note: Cry for the Blind is replacing Sugar Red Drive who were forced to cancel after members of the band were injured in an accident .

Thursday, October 29: Silverstein at the Lost Horizon

Silverstein headlines tonight at the Lost Horizon (5863 Thompson Rd.). I See Stars, silverstein.jpgMadina Lake, The Word Alive, and I Am Committing a Sin are also set to perform.

Silverstein got its start in 2000 in Burlington, Ontario. The band’s name is a reference to children’s author Shel Silverstein.

The band is currently promoting their most recent CD, A Shipwreck in the Sand, which was released in January 2009.
